Kabel .NET: The security of HTTP Digest without additional Windows accounts
	Kabel .NET is an extension for ASP.NET web applications which offers HTTP Digest authentication independent of IIS and the Windows Accounts on the web server. Specifically, it is an HTTP Module that allows you to combine your custom authentication of users (via database lookups for example) with the underlying protection of HTTP Digest.

Ideal for today's XML Web Services!

Until a common security protocol for Web Services is widely adopted in the industry, HTTP Digest is an ideal choice for client authentication in XML Web Services.

In fact, today's largest commercial XML Web Service, Microsoft MapPoint.NET, uses HTTP Digest authentication as its underlying security mechanism. Why? Because client-side implementation of HTTP Digest is commonly available out-of-the-box across major SOAP platforms, whereas support for other mechanisms, such as the protocol-based WS-Security initiative, is still lagging.

While Browser-based ASP.NET applications can easily rely on Passport or Forms Authentication for access security, Web Services cannot. Kabel .NET thus offers an effective and modular solution for authenticating requests based on a common HTTP standard; for both the client and server, the mechanism works behind the scenes while ensuring a secure exchange of credentials.

Isn't HTTP Digest already included in IIS?

Certainly, but it requires that each of your users has a separate, individual Windows account and this translates directly into a separate Microsoft ("Client Access") license for each user, or $ for short.

With Kabel.NET, your users are authenticated by your custom code, while the underlying HTTP Digest communication between client and server is done for you. No need for extra licenses or many-to-one accounts; your application can have thousands of users and each of them will be authenticated securely and separately!
