Summertime
during the sixties on the beach at Enoshima, a seaside resort not far
from Tokyo. This is where 12-year-old Nagisa lives with her mother, who
runs a small bar. Nagisa's father was a fisherman; he died several years
ago. Nagisa - translated literally, her name means 'beach' - spends most
of her time with her girlfriend Noriko, the hairdresser's daughter. Recently,
however, Nagisa has begun to find Noriko's company rather dull.
How Nagisa would love to own a record player. In order to fulfill this
particular wish she has started working in her aunt's beach restaurant.
In her spare time she likes to go swimming. In a remote bay one day, Nagisa
meets Hiroshi, a boy of her own age from Tokyo, who is spending his summer
holidays here. Hiroshi can't swim yet and so Nagisa teaches him. And because
Hiroshi is such a diligent pupil she even rewards him with a kiss.
One person who introduces Nagisa to quite a few of the many new things
she will experience during the course of this summer is her cousin Reiko,
who has come from Tokyo and, like Nagisa, is earning some money in the
restaurant. Fascinated and curious at the same time, Nagisa takes part
in Reiko's extravagant leisure activities. She has her hair permed just
like her cousin and accompanies her to a beach party where she dances
the whole night away. But when Nagisa cuts off all her hair the next morning,
it is as if she were bidding farewell to her childhood. Nagisa is just
dying to know what Hiroshi will think of her new look...
