THERE'S ONLY ONE JIMMY GRIMBLE

Director: John Hay
Great Britain, 2000
105 Minutes
recommended age: 11 years

Jimmy dreams of becoming a professional footballer. Whenever he mucks about on his own he reveals a stunning ability to handle the ball and yet, out there on the football pitch, all his self-confidence drains away.
Fifteen-year-old Jimmy lives with his mother, Donna, who has just split up with Harry and is about to pick up with Two Dogs, a narcissistic Harley biker. Jimmy always got on well with Harry but, sadly, Harry is already married...
Jimmy doesn't have an easy time of it at school either, where he is being bullied by Gorgeous Gordon Burley and his cronies. Moreover, Jimmy is in love with Sara, but whenever he's anywhere near her he's just lost for words. One evening, Jimmy is being chased by Gorgeous and Psycho down the empty streets of a derelict quarter, when an old woman still living there comes to his aid. The old lady's apartment is full of all manner of objects and memorabilia. Among her things are a pair of worn-down old football boots, which the old lady gives Jimmy as he leaves, adding that they will give him magical power if he wears them on the football pitch. Unimpressed, Jimmy chucks the rotten old shoes into a rubbish bin on the way home. Shortly after that, Gorgeous hides Jimmy's own football boots just before an important match is due to kick-off; Jimmy suddenly remembers the old boots and tears off to get them. He reaches the football pitch just in time to save his team from losing by shooting a sensational goal. But this is only the beginning...
