HEIDI
- freely after the novel by Johanna Spyri -

Director: Markus Imboden
Switzerland/France, 2001
100 Minutes
recommended age: 8 years

Heidi is a little girl when her mother dies. Now orphaned, she is sent to live with her grandfather, a man shrouded in mystery who lives the life of a recluse. Her grandfather is far from enthusiastic about having to take care of his granddaughter but, gradually, little Heidi is able to win him over. Then one day, Heidi is sent to her Aunt Dete in Berlin as a companion for her Aunt's 'difficult' only child, Clara. Grandfather is left behind, sad and lonely without Heidi. Clara is not at all taken with her new 'sister' Heidi. Before long, Heidi begins to find Clara's vicious attacks unbearable and she runs off out into the strange city. Although Heidi's attempt to run away is unsuccessful, Clara at least begins to show her some respect. Heidi supports Clara and convinces Dete to take her daughter out to see her favorite group. But Dete forgets all about the concert; that same evening, Heidi gets on a train heading for Switzerland - and grandfather. Bitterly disappointed in her mother, Clara tries to follow Heidi. In the end, Dete discovers her distraught daughter sitting all alone on the platform and now, at last, mother and daughter have a heart-to-heart. Dete promises to make more time for Clara. Meanwhile, Heidi arrives home, where she is welcomed by her overjoyed grandfather.
