Eight-year-old
Tessa has to come to terms with the fact that her father has left the
family in the lurch, without any money, in an inhospitable part of England
and that they must now try to manage on their own. Tessa's mother shows
no emotion whatsoever and, no matter how Tessa tries to coax her out of
her stupor, her mother remains unapproachable and simply withdraws to
her bed. Her grandparents and her sisters are also at a loss as to what
to do. Then, suddenly, the little girl realizes that she can no longer
move her arm...
