Old
Pettson and his cat Findus decide to go fishing. It’s New Years’
Eve, the last day of the old year and the sun glistens on the
frozen lake. The harsh winter appears to have abated for a moment
and it almost feels as if spring were on the way. But the weather
is deceptive; dark clouds are now gathering on the horizon and
a storm is brewing. Undeterred, the old man sets off in his
latest invention – an ‘ice boat’– while Findus, whizzes along
like a rocket on skates. Their neighbour, Gustavsson, tries
to warn them.To no avail, for, once they discover a school of
frozen fish the two are much too preoccupied to listen to him.
The wind picks up, it starts snowing and, before long, they
are shrouded in darkness. The storm gets stronger and stronger
and Pettson hastily erects a little igloo made of the deepfrozen
blocks of fish they have cut out of the ice. Findus discovers
that it’s really quite cosy and exciting inside the igloo –
even though he’s rather cold, there’s only half a bread roll
to eat and Pettson just won’t let him sleep no matter how tired
he is . . . In order to get through the stormy night, the man
and the cat start recounting stories about their experiences
throughout the year. They talk about Findus’ birthday, for instance,
when he almost didn’t get his pancake, but also about the time
they tried to scare the fox but ended up giving someone else
a fright instead, and the day when Pettson was in a really terrible
mood, or how they once almost forget to celebrate Christmas.
There are so many stories to be told, but even so, it would
be so much better if the storm just stopped because even old
Pettson is having a hard time trying to keep awake. If only
someone would come to their rescue! But who on earth could possibly
be thinking about an old man and his cat on New Years’ Eve?
