His
short-sightedness has earned chubby little Manolito the less
than flattering nickname “four-eyes”. But that’s not the only
cross he has to bear. The summer holidays are about to begin
and it looks as though he will have to spend them at home with
his mother Catalina, his grandfather Nicholas and his young
brother in their tiny, cramped apartment of just fifty square
metres in Caranachel, a district of Madrid. Manolito’s father
is a long-distance lorry driver and will be travelling all summer
long. Manolito is doomed to endure a boring holiday, since,
naturally, all of his friends have gone away. Manolito would
give anything to go to the seaside, however, things turn out
quite differently to what Manolito had expected when his father
returns from one of his trips with the wonderful idea to take
Manolito along on his next haulage assignment. The trip is only
due to last a few days and, after all, as the oldest son it
may well fall to Manolito to take over the business one day.
Manolito’s overworked mother is only too happy to agree to the
plan and so Manolito climbs up alongside Dad in the driver’s
cab. He is bound for an adventurous holiday accompanying his
truck driver Dad on his travels, not least because now he will
experience a side of his father he has never known before.
