It
is the height of summer in Kruisem. Blinker, his dog Sadee and
his friends Jonas and Mats are enjoying the school holidays
together. They spend a lot of their time at the river near the
castle grounds. They love playing in the boathouse and swimming
in the water, but they have to be careful that the forester
doesn’t catch them, because he’s liable to shoot at anything
that Mrs. Slick, the castle’s housekeeper, finds suspicious.
Once Blinker gets caught up in a chain underwater and, while
he is frantically trying to free himself, he catches sight of
what appears to be a skull on the riverbed. Mats manages to
save him from drowning, and, once he has got his breath back,
Blinker tells the others what he has seen. None of them believe
him, and so Blinker, determined to prove it, secretly borrows
his Dad’s expensive camera, transforms it into an underwater
camera and goes down to the river once more. Unfortunately,
the camera slips out of his hands and sinks down into the depths
beyond his reach. To help Blinker find the money to buy his
Dad a new camera, the boys all enter a ‘best invention’ competition.
Their first creation, however, is cruelly destroyed by members
of the Red Vampires, a motorbike gang who have got it in for
Mats. What to do? The trio are really at a loss . . . What’s
more, Turbo, Jonas’ dog, suddenly disappears one day. And he’s
by no means the first dog that never returned from the castle
grounds. Blinker begins to suspect that something’s afoot and,
when his own dog, Sadee, doesn’t turn up either, Blinker is
convinced that strange things are happening inside the castle.
